Who says that teaching your kids about tooth decay, prevention and good oral health can’t be fun?
Tia The Tooth
By Isabella R, San Francisco
In the land of Teeth, everyone was white and sparkly and clean as can be. Everyone except Tia the tooth. Tia was a nice a tooth but she never brushed. She also loved to swim in the sugar pool. Tia’s mom would say “Tia brush yourself or else you won’t be shiny like the rest of us!” But Tia never listened. One morning Tia went to the dentist to get a checkup with the rest of her family. All of her brothers and sisters were shiny and clean and the dentist said they were perfect. But when the dentist checked Tia, he said she was covered in plaque and was very yellow. Everyone gasped. “Do you brush Tia?” The doctor asked. “No...” Tia said. “Well, start brushing and then you won’t have to worry about getting a filling.” So for the next year until Tia’s next check up she brushed twice every day. Once after breakfast, and once before she went to bed. She also stopped swimming in the sugar pool and swam in nice clean water. She also crunched down on lots of nice vegetables and cleaned off her plaque. When she went to her checkup at the end of the year, the dentist said that Tia was one of the cleanest teeth in the whole land of Teeth! “Good job, Tia! If you stay like this all the time you will be sparkling and never have to get a filling!” Tia lived happily ever, and stayed shiny and clean.
Emma’s Teeth
By Sophie B, Boston
One day there was a girl named Emma. She had the prettiest teeth in the town. It was because Emma’s mom put her on a special diet where she could only eat vegetables, and things that were good for her health and teeth. But one summer, Emma went to camp for 2 months. At camp she decided she wanted to eat candy because they had all these special candies Emma had never heard of! And after all, the candies tasted so good. When Emma came back from camp, her mother looked at her teeth and asked, “Emma! What happened to your white teeth!? They’re yellow!” “Well, I ate candy and drank sodas at camp. Sorry, mom, but they didn’t have the special foods you give me.” Emma responded. “But Emma, you can still eat healthy even when you eat candy. Let’s make a deal. If you brush and drink lots of water and eat your vegetables, you can eat candy. But, just not all time.” Emma’s mom said. “Okay, mom, thank you for understanding.” So after that, Emma only ate candy on special occasions but was fine with that. She also got her shiny, white teeth back.
